The Story

Inspired by a real incident in Oakland, California, in 2013, “57 Bus” delves into the aftermath of a hate crime where an 18-year-old non-binary high school student’s skirt was set on fire. The musical intricately explores how this traumatic event forever alters the lives of the victim, Skylar, and the perpetrator, John Michael. Confronted with the harsh reality of intolerance, Skylar grapples with the profound question of whether the pursuit of self-expression is worth the challenges in an unforgiving world.

As Skylar navigates the complexities of their quest for self-expression, a journey of self-discovery unfolds. The musical becomes a poignant exploration of identity, resilience, and healing. “57 Bus” offers an unfiltered perspective on the impact of intolerance on young lives, highlighting the transformative power of understanding and empathy. Ultimately, it aims to contribute to breaking the cycle of hate, fostering a narrative of peace and unity.

NOTE: 57 Bus does not seek to represent a definitive or all-inclusive overview of the rich and complex non-binary/agender/gender-nonconforming/trans experience. Rather its purpose is to open the door to further dialogue around a timely and important issue. I believe this story deserves to be told as part of a comprehensive exploration of the human experience. Ryan is committed to receiving constructive feedback from audiences, actors, directors, and people in the trans/gender-nonconforming/non-binary community so that he may refine this project to be the best version of itself.

About

HISTORY

The topic for this show was discovered while on an extended Google search for top news stories starting in 2000. When Ryan reached 2013 he stumbled upon various news articles regarding the Fire on the 57 Bus in Oakland. Upon reading many articles he immediately felt that there was more to this story and that this story could sing. This is more than just a story about a tragic event, it’s the story about the power of fate, and how things can change instantly, in this case for two children. He is inspired to present this story because its core themes such as intolerance, self-expression, forgiveness, justice, and peace are ever-present in our society, and if this story is told successfully, he hopes that audiences will see the superpower in giving love and acceptance for all.

57 Bus has had nine table readings in Los Angeles, one developmental reading in Chicago and another developmental reading in New York City. Ryan Luevano was accepted as Artists-in-Residence at Chateau d’Orquevaux in France for the summer of 2020 and has been awarded the Denis Diderot Grant for his work on 57 Bus. The musical was also selected for a concert presentation with the Foundation for New American Musical and will have a reading on July 26, 2021, at the Co. New Musical Festival.

Most recently 57 BUS was selected to participate in the Latine Musical Theatre Lab’s Table Reading Series 2023, graciously supported by The Miranda Family Fund, and hosted by Amas Musical Theatre. As part of this program, the musical worked closely with dramaturg Amauta M. Firmino (dramaturg for the multi-Tony nominated production SLAVE PLAY).
